GRANT ARENDSE WINS WP UNI CHAMPS : 7/28/2009 10:32:16

Saturday 13 June saw the Annual Vudu W.P University surfing champs in association with Hurley and Sport n surf take place at Muizenberg. The event was in preparation for all 3 university’s to practise their contest surfing skills before the SA University champs being held at Cape St Francis next week. Conditions were rough and rainy but did not dampen the spirits of 45 students from UCT, CPUT and Stellenbosch in the highly contestable 2 ft conditions. UCT had a great start to defending their 2008 title with top seed Chris Bond showing stylish turns in all his heats and surprise finalist Justin Watts eliminating top seeds on route to the finals. Grant Arendse, Rezaar De Nicker of CPUT displayed great home knowledge defeating defending Champ Josh Salie despite doing one the most skilful moves ever witnessed in the event 9.5 ride. In the FINAL it was Birthday boy and CPUT dark horse Grant Arendse taking top honours with UCT cpt Chris Bond placing a close 2nd with Justin Watts 3rd and CPUT cpt Rezaar De Nicker in 4th. In the ladies section all 4 finalists surfed a extremely competitive final with UCT Sarah Nicholson taken 1st place, Kerry Hodgkinson in 2nd, Stellenbosch Lisa Mace in a close 3rd and UCT Kerri Anderson 4th. Overall –CPUT took out the TEAM CUP for the first time by 30 points with 6380 points. and UCT with 6350 points and Stellenbosch 3450 points, UCT will be going to SA University Champs to defend their 2008 title!
