HOUT BAY / LLANDUDNO – SURF & LIFESAVING OUTREACH PROGRAMME (2 February)

Last Saturday saw a group of excited youngsters from Imizamo Yethu and Hangberg taking to the sea at Hout Bay beach for their first session of nipper training this year.

Llandudno Lifesaving Club, in conjunction with Cape Town Surfing and  Hout Bay Boardriders, is running a nipper (junior lifeguard) OUT REACH programme aimed at teaching less privileged children from the Hout Bay area, the skills of a junior lifesaver.

The programme was started last year at Llandudno Beach. But because it was awkward for the youngsters to get to Llandudno on Sundays, as well as the often very rough seas conditions, it was decided  to move the training sessions to the more friendly conditions at Hout Bay.

The youngsters will be taught fitness, wave skills and knowledge, board riding and swimming.

Once they are competent in the water, they will be entered for a nipper qualification test, which will enable them to join the Llandudno nipper team in competitions.

And eventually it is hoped they will be able to qualify as lifeguards and surf instructors.

Please get in contact with Liam Wood if you are able to help with food and equipment.
